Four Cups: Deliverance – Part 2

‘Four Cups’ relates to the drinking of four cups of wine at the Passover meal, each of which signifies one of four of God’s covenant promises, that He made to His own people.

“Therefore, say to the people of Israel: ‘I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and I will rescue you (deliver you) from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. I will claim you (take you) as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt.”
Exodus 6:6-7 NLT

Amongst this Scripture we note four verbs of redemption: Free, deliver, redeem and take.

Why does God promise to deliver, redeem and take the children of Israel from being slaves, after they were already free from their oppression? Because they still thought and acted like slaves. Even after they had left Egypt there was still a little bit of Egypt left in them. For 430 years the people had been living as slaves in inhumane conditions, being owned and treated as property, which robs people of their base dignity, and the honour of being human. Thus meaning, they had a wrong view of God, and therefore their own future.

This relates to your Christian life – all the Old Testament is fulfilled in Jesus – as God is the only one never to break a promise we can believe that these promises apply to us today with the subsequent basis – ‘Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’
